How to Convert Liquid Measures

Whether it is cups to pints or quarts to gallons, converting measurements of liquid can seem tricky. Luckily, you don't have to be a rocket scientist, or even a chef, to do the math. With a few simple steps, you can convert measurements of liquid just as easily as you can boil a cup, or eight fluid ounces, of water.

Instructions

    • 1

Convert teaspoons to tablespoons. There are three teaspoons in one tablespoon. Divide the number of tablespoons by three to determine how many tablespoons you have. For example, 48 teaspoons of water equals 16 tablespoons of water (48 teaspoons / 3 = 16 tablespoons).

    • 2

Convert tablespoons to fluid ounces. There are two fluid ounces in one tablespoon. Multiply the number of tablespoons by two to determine how many ounces you have. For example, 16 tablespoons of water equals 32 fluid ounces of water (16 tablespoons x 2 = 32 fluid ounces). Note: fluid ounces are the measurement of volume of a liquid, not the weight.

    • 3

Convert fluid ounces to cups. There are eight fluid ounces in one cup. Divide the number of fluid ounces by eight to determine how many cups you have. For example, 32 fluid ounces of water equals 4 cups of water (32 fluid ounces / 8 = 4 cups).

    • 4

Convert cups to pints. There are two cups in one pint. Divide the number of cups by two to determine how many pints you have. For example, 4 cups of water equals 2 pints (4 cup / 2 = 2 pints).

    • 5

Convert pints to quarts. There are two pints in one quart. Divide the number of pints by two to determine how many quarts you have. For example, 2 pints equals 1 quart (2 pints / 2 = 1 quarts).

    • 6

Convert quarts to gallons. There are four quarts in one gallon. Divide the number of quarts by four determine how many gallons you have. For example, 1 quart equals .25 gallons (1 quart / 4 = .25 gallons).
