How to Convert a Gram Per Meter to Pounds Per Inch

Grams per meter, abbreviated g/m, and pounds per inch, abbreviated lb/in, measure linear density. Linear density is measured in units of mass per unit of distance. For example, linear density could measure the mass of a pole based on its length. When converting units of linear density, you can either convert the unit of mass first and then convert the unit of distance, or you can convert in one step if you know the combined conversion factor.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the linear density in grams per meter by 453.59237 to convert to pounds per inch. For example, if the length density equals 20 g/m, divide 20 by 453.59237 to get 0.0440924524369755 lb/in.

    • 2

Multiply the linear density in pounds per meter by 39.37 to convert to pounds per inch. In this example, multiply 0.0440924524369755 by 39.37 to get about 1.74 lb/in.

    • 3

Convert in one step by multiplying the linear density in grams per meter by 0.0868 to convert to pounds per inch. In this example, multiply 20 by 0.0868 to verify your conversion to 1.74 lb/in.
