"Taper" is a machining term used to describe the change in diameter of a machined part. Taper gives an indication of how much slope the surface has. You can determine the taper by measuring the difference between the diameters at different ends of a piece. This diameter difference is related to the distance between the ends of the piece. Taper measurements are expressed in units of taper per foot or inch. Knowledge of a part's taper allows a machinist to fit the part quickly and align the machine.

1
Convert the unit of foot to a unit of 12 inches by multiplying by 12 inches/foot. For example, 1 foot = 12 inches = (1 foot) x (12 inches/foot).
-
2
Reduce the unit of 12 inches to 1 inch by dividing by 12. Write the unit of 1 inch as inch.

3
Divide the value that precedes the unit "taper per foot" by 12, and follow the quotient with the new unit of "taper per inch." For example, a taper of 24 inches taper per foot = 2 inches taper per inch = 24 inches taper per 12 inches = (24/12) inches taper per (12 inch/12).
