Social Studies Projects for Kindergarten

It is important to make social studies activities fun so that they entertain children in kindergarten. There are many different activities that you can help the students with or they can do themselves. Kindergarten students will be able to learn about social studies while learning through a fun hands-on approach that will hold their attention.
  1. Geography

    • Give students craft supplies such as paper mache, balloons and poster paint to make and construct a globe. They can design and paint the countries and continents throughout the world. Students can draw maps of their neighborhood using posters, markers and crayons. Help children to make a poster about the crops, exports and other aspects of a foreign country. This activity will allow the students to learn the placement of the different countries and continents in the world.

    African Djembe Drum

    • Students can make a drum using a terra cotta colored plastic planter that has a seven-inch diameter, a plastic lid for a disposable food container, a sturdy plastic container with a tightly sealing lid, beans or small similar objects, thin twine or string, medium weight twine, a glue gun, craft glue, brown acrylic paint and black paint or markers. Assist the kindergarten student with attaching thin twine around the planter in a a zig zag pattern. Use glue on the string at the top and bottom and press down on the string to help set it to the planter. Have your students put glue on the inner rim of the food container lid and place the lid on the top of the container. They can decorate the top and bottom rims of the drum using glue and medium twine. Give the student brown paint and a paint brush so that they can paint the drum brown. Have the students put glue on the bottom of the planter and put the plastic container on it. Put beans or similar small objects into the container to allow it to be more stable. Tell the students to decorate the drum with markers as they wish. This activity allows the students to play a drum from a different culture in the world.

    Social Studies History

    • Give the students a newspaper, poster pens and markers to make historical social studies projects. Have the student make a poster showing historical events. They can use markers and printouts to show historical events on their poster. The student can draw photos of historical items on paper to make a historical event line. You can help the students write a song for historical things and help them make a play using puppets that they can make into important figures. This activity will teach students about important historical facts and figures.

    Search for Leprechaun Gold

    • This project is made using a piece of white construction paper, white crayon, small tin of watercolors, pebbles and gold spray paint. You can also use gold-wrapped chocolate coins for the treasure hunt. Spray paint some pebbles gold or use gold chocolate coins to put throughout the classroom. Write on a map in white crayon the directions to get to the gold by drawing easy pictures and arrows to the gold on paper to make a map. Place a few gold pieces on the map and place a watercolor brush nearby. Instruct the students to paint over the paper with the water brush to make the pictures of the map appear magically. You may need to aid the student in deciphering the code on the map and finding the gold pieces. This activity teaches the students how to use a map.
