Building projects promote teamwork and communication between kindergarten students. Stock the classroom with blocks of various materials such as wood, cardboard, foam and plastic and create a building space large enough for children to work in groups. Students can also use a good selection of cardboard boxes ranging in size for a classroom teamwork project. After agreeing on a design, such as castle, car, airplane or animal, the students will work together by painting, decorating and assembling the boxes. This ongoing project will keep the children focused on a common goal.
Classroom science projects excite students and allow them to share tasks and responsibilities. Give the students simple science projects, such as evaporating water or growing roots on a potato, and work with them to form a hypothesis, conduct the experiment and observe the results. For a long-term teamwork project, students can work together to plant and maintain a class garden. They will team up to investigate the scientific concepts of plant growth and create a tranquil and rewarding space.
Group art projects allow kindergarten students to contribute individual creativity to a collaborative artistic piece. Provide large paper, cardboard, cloth and wood canvases for group mural activities. The students can make a random collection of artwork or all contribute sections of a pattern related to a class theme or interest. They might also use three-dimensional objects made from Styrofoam or cardboard to collage as a group.
Kindergarten students experience the early stages of language development through reading and writing activities. Involve the students in collaborative language exercises to encourage teamwork and literacy. During group time, ask the children to develop a class story. They can each add a piece of the plot and illustrate their ideas. Once the students finish, combine the pages into a storybook and display it in the classroom. Students can also work together on a classroom lost and found by keeping a running list of missing items. Through these activities, the children will practice writing and work together.
