Buy alphabet-shaped sponges where teacher's supplies are sold so children can dip them in tempera paint and stamp them onto paper. Cut out palm trees from brown construction paper and have children stamp on alphabet leaves. Pass children 12- by 18-inch sheets of white construction paper. Provide brown and green tempera paint and brushes. Let the children paint a picture of the coconut tree from the story on to the paper. Ask the children to paint coconuts in the tree. When dry, give children foam alphabet stickers to attach to the paintings.
Ask children to flatten empty paper towel tubes, then paint them with brown tempera paint. Let the tubes dry completely. Cut ovals from several hues of green tissue paper. Ask kids to stuff the tops of the tubes with the green tissue paper leaves. Apply a 3-inch strip of magnetic tape to the back of the trunks of the "trees." Glue foam letter shapes to the trunks of the trees to spell each child's name.
