Play a Valentine-inspired addition game. Set up a beanbag tossing game called Numbered Hearts Toss in an open area of the classroom. Draw 10 hearts on a piece of poster board. Write numbers, one through 10, in the hearts. Lay the poster on the floor. Let kindergartners take turns tossing a bean bag, trying to land it on one of the hearts. Each child gets three tosses. Keep track of the number printed on the heart each time a child lands a beanbag. Add the sum of the three numbers for each child. The child with the highest sum wins the game.
Cut five pastel-colored construction paper hearts per-child for a Valentine Word Hunt game. Write a word on each paper heart that has something to do with Valentine's day. Choose familiar words --- love, heart and candy, for example. Write color words, red, violet and pink and others --- spring, pretty and kiss, that fit with the theme. Before the party, hide the hearts around the room. To play, ask the children to hunt for five hearts each, then bring them back to a designated area. When they have found all the hearts, let them take turns creating a sentence to say to the class, using the Valentine words they found.
Play an active Valentine party game that offers kindergarten students reading practice, movement and silliness. Fill a classroom pocket chart --- a poster-size chart with clear pockets sewn into the front --- with paper hearts. Write an active command on one side of each heart. Choose commands like, "Hop on one foot," or "Do a crazy dance." Let the kids take turns drawing hearts from pockets to read, with the teacher's help, to the rest of the class. Play up-tempo music for 1 minute after each command is read as all the children act out the heart's printed instruction.
Plan a matching game at a kindergarten Valentine's Day party to practice pattern recognition and encourage social interaction. Cut hearts from assorted scrapbook paper, wallpaper sample books or construction paper. Make one heart for every two children in the class. Cut each heart in half. Vary each cut, using a zig-zag cut for some and wavy cuts for others. Place each heart half in a sealed envelope. At the party, pass one envelope to each child. Kindergartners rip the envelopes open on the count of three, then race around the room to find the classmate who holds the matching half. When the children find their matches, give each pair a box of candy conversation hearts to share.
