George Washington is featured on the United States quarter. Obtain a roll of quarters from your bank and bring them in to show your kindergarten students. Provide each student with a precut cardboard circle. Wrap the circle in aluminum foil to create the base for the silver coin. Instruct the students to use the real coin for an example, and with a black marker or paint, create their own versions of the front of the quarter.
An acrostic is a poem that uses the first letter of a given word as the start to another simple phrase or word. Teach your students about George Washington and how to write an acrostic. Write the word "Washington" horizontally across a sheet of paper, and hand this out to your class. Instruct your kindergarteners to write a word for each letter in Washington's last name that describes him or something related to his presidency. Display the acrostics in your classroom to celebrate Presidents' Day.
Choose a piece of children's literature that provides facts about the life and times of George Washington. Read this together as a class, and then ask students to list facts about the president. Record the students' ideas on a large poster board and allow them to add illustrations to enhance the display. Post this on your classroom door for other classes to read during your school's celebration of Washington's birthday.
Study the way of life during the time of George Washington's presidency. Ask students to compose a simple letter to George Washington if he were still alive. The letter should detail the differences between life during George Washington's time and their way of life today. Encourage your students to write as much of the letter as they are able. However, because they are young, also allow them to record the letters on an audio tape.
