Have each pupil create a model of the Earth using a decoupaged Earth balloon. Blow up a 12-inch balloon and cover it with newspaper. Glue the newspaper to the balloon using a mix of half water and half glue. Cover the entire balloon and let it dry at least overnight. Allow the child to paint the Earth and its continents on the balloon using washable blue and green paint. Have smocks or old shirts for the pupils to wear during both parts of this project.
To teach the pupils about recycling, create a game in which they sort products into the correct recycling bin. Divide the class into groups and assign the group to decorate a plain cardboard box as a recycling bin. Include a box for glass, plastic, paper and aluminum. Then have the pupils search around the room for various items. Help them sort the items into the appropriate box and discuss why each item should be placed there. Encourage the children to recycle items like this in their own homes.
Part of preserving the Earth is keeping it clean by picking up litter and trash. Divide the class into groups and assign them locations outdoors to clean. Supervise pupils while out of the classroom by asking parents to volunteer during the activity. Do not allow children to pick up any dangerous items, and provide them with gloves and large trash bags to use while cleaning up the school grounds.
The Earth has a different importance for each person. Ask students to write an essay on what the Earth means to them. This might include what they like to do with the Earth, such as gardening or using its lakes and streams for swimming. Have them illustrate their essay using photographs, magazine clippings or drawings. Gather the pupils together and have them share their essays.
