Ideas for Teacher Appreciation Day

Teacher Appreciation Week is recognized in the first week of May each year. This is an opportunity to honor teachers for the hard work they do throughout the school year and to celebrate their commitment to teaching. There are many ways to show your appreciation from small tokens to large events. Avoid falling into the trap of buying nick-knacks and trinkets; give gifts a teacher will make use throughout the year.
  1. Gift Cards

    • Gift cards are now available for many stores and in various denominations. Purchase a gift card on your own or invite other parents to contribute towards a classroom gift. Gift cards to a teacher supply store allows teachers to purchase something for their classroom that can be used over and over again or gives teachers the opportunity to treat themselves to something special. Purchase a gift card to a local spa to provide your favorite teacher with some much deserved rest and relaxation.

    Travel Mugs

    • Purchase your favorite teacher a personalized travel mug. This is a gift that teachers can use to keep their favorite drink hot or cold while hard at work teaching their classes. Travel mugs such as those available on the Baudville site come with messages like "thanks" or "you make a difference." These are an inexpensive gift that will show your teacher appreciation for years to come.

    Come and Go Tea

    • Speak to your parent advisory council about planning a teacher recognition event. This can be held in honor of long-serving teachers or for the faculty as a whole. Parent and student volunteers can be enlisted to bake goodies, serve beverages and to provide entertainment. Teachers will appreciate seeing their students assist in planning and hosting the event. You can even have students develop awards for their teachers, such as "Funniest Teacher," "Sportiest Teacher," and "Most Green-Friendly Teacher."

    Fabric-Covered Thumbtacks or Magnets

    • Make this simple craft to give your teacher a unique gift. Purchase a fabric-covered buttons starter kit from your local fabric or craft store. Remove the back hook of the button using a pair of pliers. Using scraps of fabric, cut out small circles to fit your button. Follow the instructions and use the tools provided with the starter kit to cover the buttons. When buttons are covered, secure a metal tack or small round magnet into the back of the button. Place the finished product in a small gift box and finish with a ribbon. You can also purchase a small cork board to give with your handmade thumbtacks for a truly unique gift.
