Instructions

Read to your child regularly at an early age. Point out different letters on the pages and ask him to repeat the name of each one. Many children's books list each letter in bold colors and have a picture of an object that starts with the letter on the same page. After reading the book to your child a few times, he will gradually be able to identify the letters.

    • 2

Purchase magnetic letters for the refrigerator. Every time he is near the refrigerator, teach him a new letter. Show him how the letters form his name or a simple word, such as "cat" or "dog."

    • 3

Sing "The Alphabet Song" with your child. This makes learning the order of the letters an enjoyable experience for your child. He may want to sing the song repeatedly before he tires of it, but this is one of the most effective ways for children to learn, according to the Children's Physician Network.

    • 4

Form alphabet shapes with pipe cleaners, colorful clay or point out the letters on blocks while the child is playing. Make the learning interactive by asking the child to repeat the name of the letter. Pretend that you forgot the letter name a minute or two later and ask him if he can tell you.

    • 5

Grab every opportunity that presents itself as a learning experience for your child. For instance, if you are busy working on your laptop and your child wants to sit in your lap, take turns finding alphabet letters and pressing the keys to make it appear on the screen. Repetition enables the child to recognize the letters by sight eventually.
