How to Teach Kids to Learn & Remember the Alphabet

Children are naturally curious, and their best teachers are their parents. If it seems confusing to teach your child the alphabet and the correct order of the letters, don't worry. This concept is confusing to many parents. Short of flash cards and drilling the poor young mind, what else is there to do to help a child learn the alphabet? The answer is, plenty. Find the method which works best for your child, but along the way, attempt the steps listed here.

Use online games, such as the games found on the Fisher Price website. Even when the Internet is down, use the computer to learn letters. Simply pull up the word processor and allow your child to push the keys on the keyboard. Kids watch their parents play with the computer quite often. They will jump at the chance to interact with the Fisher Price website or use the word processor to feel more grown up, like mommy and daddy.

Look for letters in the real world. Outside of the computer and the home, letters are everywhere. For example, a trip to the grocery store presents opportunities to find and identify letters. Make a game of recognizing and identifying the order of the letters throughout the store. Begin with "A," and look for the letters in order. Have fun and get creative for rare letters, such as "Q" and "X.

    • 3

Teach the child to find letters in their name. Use refrigerator magnets or letter blocks to show the child the letters in their name. While playing the game in Step 2, review letters that are in the child's name. For example, when the child finds a letter in her name, cheer and say, "Yes! That's in your name!"

Sing the alphabet song every chance possible. Driving in the car, taking a bath, making dinner or choosing a book for bedtime is a good time to sing the song. The tune helps children remember the letter orders and song is a great memory technique. Encourage the child to sing with you.
