Easy Way to Teach Letters to Children

Teaching the letters of the alphabet to children is an important task that gives children the foundation they need to learn to read and write. Alphabet learning can be incorporated into many fun activities, and should be repeated early and often in the child's development. Any adult, or even older children, can help the child learn the alphabet so that the child gets as much exposure to letters as possible. Alphabet learning can be a fun family activity and can help you bond with your child.

Instructions

  1. Alphabet learning activities

    • 1

Scrapbook the alphabet. Get artsy with your child and create one scrapbook page for each letter of the alphabet, incorporating images of the letter as well as words that start with the letter on each page.

    • 2

Sing the alphabet song with your child. Putting the letters of the alphabet together with a catchy tune is very helpful for children's memories.

    • 3

Let the child trace his name. Children love relating lessons to themselves, so write your child's name onto a piece of paper with a thick pen and place another piece of paper over it for the child to trace his name on.

    • 4

Make alphabet bingo cards. Make a grid on a piece of paper and write one letter of the alphabet in each square of the grid. Call out letters one by one and have your child mark his grid if a letter is called that is written on his card. When he marks all the letters in a row, he wins!

    • 5

Finger paint the alphabet. Children need to learn dexterity and fine motor skills by getting lots of practice using their hands. Use a large piece of paper and non-toxic finger paints to let your child practice making upper and lower case letters with her hands.

Test your child. Get a piece of paper with each letter written on it, and point to a random letter one at a time. Ask your child what letter you are pointing to, and what that letter sounds like.
