How to Teach Alphabet Recognition

Teaching alphabet recognition to children at an early age is important. Early recognition of all the letters can help them to make a connection with the sounds. Children learn at different levels, therefore, it is best to use various methods when teaching them. Exposing them to methods such as written letters and memory devices can reinforce recognition of the alphabets.

Instructions

      Teach the child the name of each letters in the alphabet. Write the letters on flash cards using bright colored markers. Cut out letters from sandpaper or Styrofoam using scissors and let the child trace the letters with his/her fingers while saying them aloud.

      Sing the letters of the alphabet along with the child. While singing, point to each of the letters in the alphabet. Practice the the letters of the alphabet by singing the alphabet song each day.

      Create picture cards using various words that rhymes. Combine the cards and ask the child to find words that match. Use words such as hat/cat, goat/boat, fan/pan, snake/bake and fan/pan.

      Write both uppercase and lowercase letters and ask the child to differentiate them. Choose a specific letter for the day and ask the child to cut out letters from magazines to match the first letter of the word.
