How to Reward Kindergarten Students

Kindergarten teachers frequently use reward systems and behavior charts to help manage students' behavior in the classroom. Younger students respond more positively to tangible rewards for meeting the teacher's behavior expectations. By offering students a reward for exhibiting positive behaviors, students will learn to monitor their own actions and think about consequences.

    • 1

Create the behavior chart by dividing the poster board into sections. Draw the chart so that there is a column for each day of the week and a row for each student's name. Display the board in a visible area of the classroom, such as the bulletin board.

    • 2

Fill your box with small age-appropriate items to be used as rewards. Cut a small hole in the box top with scissors. The hole should be large enough for the children to reach in and pull something out.

    • 3

Explain to the class that at the end of each day students who do not receive time-out and who are well-behaved will get a smiley face on the chart. Tell them that on Friday students with 3 or more smiley faces will be able to grab something from the treasure box.

    • 4

Monitor student behavior on an on-going basis. Frequently remind students of the reward they may be able to get on Friday if they are well-behaved. At the end of each day record students' behavior on the chart.

    • 5

Allow students who are eligible for a prize to reach into the box and pick something on Friday near the end of the school day.
