How to Teach in Teams in Kindergarten

Team teaching refers to a group of two or more teachers that collaborate to educate a group of students. On the kindergarten level, this approach to teaching can be effective, as it provides students with changes in their environment and activities, as well as offers them an opportunity to experience different teaching styles -- all elements that help young minds grow. If you're about to embark on a kindergarten team teaching experience with one or more other teachers, carefully plan and execute your approach to ensure students are benefiting from this method of teaching.

Instructions

    • 1

Meet with team teachers to define roles. Determine who will be teaching what subject area and if these teaching roles will be maintained throughout the school year, or if the roles will be alternated between teachers throughout the year. For example, will one teacher instruct English-Language Arts for the entire year, or will the teaching of this subject be rotated throughout the team. Take into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of each teacher. For example, if one teacher is an exceptional math teacher and another feels she is not as strong at teaching the subject, assign the role of the math teacher to the person who is better suited to teach the subject.

    • 2

Determine goals and objectives and organize lessons and activities to meet those goals and objectives. Discuss, as a group, the state and school curriculum guidelines and also discuss your personal goals and objectives. Share ideas with one another for lessons and activities that may be used to meet the goals and objectives. If teachers that are teaching specific content areas are designing their own lessons, share the lessons with the group to get their input and to ensure they agree with the approach that is being taken.

    • 3

Create activities and lessons that are engaging and meet the interests and abilities of all students. Include modifications that allow for varied abilities, enabling all students to gain from the lessons that are taught.

    • 4

Have weekly or bi-weekly meetings to discuss current and future lesson plans. Team teachers need to be in sync with one another and aware of what is going on with their students. Discuss student progress, successes and pitfalls. If students experience problems, work together to come up with more effective lessons, activities or approaches.
