How to Teach Temperature in Kindergarten

Weather and temperature are concepts taught in kindergarten classes. Students learn how temperatures change with the season, and even during the course of a day. Employ a lesson plan that will help students make connections between temperature and the weather. A temperature lesson can last all year, so students become aware of their environment throughout the changing seasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Lead a conversation with your students about temperature-related weather terms. Have them make a list of words like snowy, sunny, windy and rainy. Then have students discuss whether these words make them think of cold or hot temperatures.

    • 2

Show pictures of different weather conditions and have students describe what they see, then decide what kind of temperatures they believe they would feel in those conditions.

    • 3

Hang a thermometer outside a classroom window or in a place outdoors where students have access to it. Teach students to read the thermometer, then choose one every day and have that student read the thermometer and comment on it each morning. Use this data throughout the year for understanding how the temperature changes with the seasons.

    • 4

Display a calendar to talk to students about how the temperature changes through the year. Start by helping students identify with each season by talking about what happens in each, and then ask them to think about whether it is cold or hot during that time. For instance, most kindergartners are aware that it is cold at Christmastime in many areas and that Christmas is in the winter, so they'll be able to make the connection that winter is a cold-weather season.

    • 5

Ask students to notice the weather early in the morning on the way to school, on the playground at lunch time, after school and at home in the evening. Lead a discussion about how temperatures change during the course of a day.
