How to Teach Weather in Kindergarten

Good kindergarten teachers try to make subjects fun, interesting and hands-on for students. When teaching about the weather, instructors should incorporate various activities into the subject. The first step in teaching about weather is to help the children understand what weather is and the different types of weather conditions. Lessons about the weather for kindergarten students can incorporate math and language skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Discuss weather. When you introduce this subject to kindergarten students, most will already understand the basics of weather. Explain the different types of weather conditions and what a weather forecaster does. Offer a brief explanation of what weather radar is.

    • 2

Teach them about extreme weather conditions. Talk about flooding, tornadoes and hurricanes and describe each one to the children. Ask children questions about each of these events, such as “What bad things can happen if a flood occurs?”

    • 3

Incorporate the daily weather into classroom routine. Each morning at school, discuss the weather conditions and keep track of them on a chart. Ask children if it is sunny, cloudy or rainy outside. Place pictures on the chart to illustrate the day's conditions. You can also have a thermometer by the classroom window. Ask a child to read the thermometer each day and write down the temperature. Determine if the temperature is higher or lower than the day before. In addition to the large classroom chart, the children can also keep individual weather charts.

    • 4

Explain the seasons that occur in a year. Let the children name and describe each of the four seasons. Give children paper and have them create a page for each season that illustrates an activity they might do at that time. For example, a child could draw a swimming pool for a summer page. A child could draw a picture of picking apples for a fall page.

Give a writing assignment. Ask the children to fill in the blank: “My favorite season is...” Have them write an additional sentence about why they like this season. This activity will help children think about weather and the types of weather conditions in the seasons.
