How to Teach Geometry Properties to Kindergarten

Looking for patterns in nature and the environment is a important part of geometry education. In kindergarten, young children gain and build a foundation in geometry by exploring and analyzing 2D and 3D shapes. Activities are often integrated into daily routines such as art and outdoor activities. The aim is to help young children develop vocabulary to describe different shapes such as size, number of sides and vertices. Sorting skills are developed by using the classification of attributes to determine which shapes are the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw shapes such as triangle, square, rectangle, circle, oval, pentagon, hexagon and octagon on cardboard. Draw different sizes of each shape and cut out the shapes in various colors.

    • 2

Make a couple of sets so that you can hand out material to small groups of children in your classroom. The sets should consist of different shapes in various colors and sizes. Laminate the shapes.

    • 3

Divide the children into small groups and hand out the laminated shapes.

    • 4

Demonstrate the game by asking a child to choose a large yellow circle. Let the child pick up the card and say something about the card, for example, it is yellow. Then ask another child to choose a small green square.

    • 5

Let the children play the game and take turns asking the other children in the group to choose certain shapes.

    • 6

Pick out some of the smallest shapes and put them aside.

    • 7

Let the children choose a shape from the pile with larger shapes. Ask them to trace the shape on some paper and to cut out their shape.

    • 8

Let the children make a drawing inside their cut out shapes.
