Determine the goal of the new procedure. For this article, we will assume the new procedure is having students line up before leaving the classroom to go to lunch. The goal of having them line up is to prevent noise and disruption and to move from room to room as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Decide on how much time to allocate for the new procedure and how it will fit within the rest of the day's or year's schedule. For lining students before lunch, the new procedure should take place right before lunchtime as indicated either by the school bell or the classroom schedule. For procedures that do not take place daily, think about how they can be integrated with your larger class curriculum.
Find ways to make the new procedure fun. Is there an appropriate song or clapping exercise to keep students engaged? For lining up prior to lunch, a different student could lead the line each day. This both keeps students interested and integrates larger classroom expectations -- in this case, of taking turns -- within the new procedure.
Take time to explain the new procedure to kindergartners, as they will need time to learn even the simplest of procedures. Explain why the new procedure is being introduced.
Demonstrate the new procedure. In this case, show the students where they will be lining up.
Practice the new procedure with the students. For lining up, give yourself ample time prior to lunch to make sure every student knows where to go.
Encourage your students when they have successfully accomplished the new procedure.
