Make a procedural chart outlining how students should behave and how to perform what you require them to do in class. List classroom rules on a corner of the blackboard with chalk or on a piece of Bristol board using markers. Include all major procedures, from what to do to answer a question to how to hand in homework. Use the chart to remind students of the classroom procedures.
Explain the routines to the students when they are introduced, and have students practice the proper procedures until they can do them properly. Remind students throughout the year of the proper procedures by referring them to the procedural chart and by having them practice the correct procedures when they forget to follow them.
Reward and praise the students when they successfully follow the correct classroom procedures. You can reward the students by having them play a game they enjoy or by showing them a movie. These are only two possible examples. Choose a reward that suits you and your students the best.
