How to Trace Names for Kindergarten

Teaching children to correctly write their names is a big step in kindergarten. This can be achieved through a tracing exercise, where the teacher demonstrates correct formation of letters. The correct formation of letters can be shown by using directional arrows in the example provided to students. Using demonstration and repetition will help students to gain the skill of writing their own name independently without the aid of tracing in a short amount of time.

    • 1

Write the child's name in large script on a piece of lined paper multiple times. Providing proper examples of correct format for each letter in the child's name is essential in teaching them how to write it correctly. You will want to write each name multiple times on a page in order to give them a chance to practice. After you write out each page, make copies of it for future use.

    • 2

Draw directional arrows for each of the letters. Having students trace their name is one thing, but teaching them to trace the letters with correct formation is essential. Draw the directional arrows for formation of each letter just outside of the lines in the letter. This will provide your students with instructions for each individual letter.

    • 3

Instruct the student on the correct formation of each letter in their name. Now that you have prepared the worksheet for individual practice, you need to teach the students what the arrows mean by demonstrating correct formation. You can do this either on a chalkboard or dry-erase board, or individually. If a parent or other classroom aid is available, this will save time if instructing on a one-to-one basis.

    • 4

Direct the students to follow the arrows and practice writing their name. The children will complete the tracing activity worksheets on a daily basis until they can write their name successfully. Repetition is necessary for them to be able to understand correct formation and repeat the skill without the use of aids.

    • 5

Circulate around the room and check on individual students' progress. You will want to check on students throughout their completion of the tracing activity. Keep in mind that students learn and retain information at different speeds. While some may complete the activity and be able to write their name without tracing, others may struggle and need more practice.
