Students may practice writing skills while sharing about themselves in book form or through poetry. You may choose to use a template found online, created by yourself in an electronic document, or have your students complete their own books. Books would include birthday, favorite color, favorite food and other items you choose. Poetry may allow students to practice rhyming skills while sharing facts about themselves.
Keeping social studies in mind, you might choose to have students create a time line. Students' time lines would begin with their date of birth and progress through their first days of kindergarten. They may choose to include pictures of birthday parties and family events or images of preschool or day care.
All About Me Museums (scholastic.com) are another creative option. Allow students to create trifold boards sharing personal information much like the time line project. Provide students the opportunity to bring in artifacts to place on display and share during an open house where parents or older students can visit.
Collages are an option for students with limited writing skills. Children select pictures from the Internet or magazines that explain who they are. They may include pictures of their favorite foods, cartoon characters, items they love, or images of jobs they want when they grow up.
Self-portraits allow students to express who they are. Begin by tracing each student. Allow students to decorate the body. Basic coloring might portray the child's physical traits. More complex portraits might include pictures of favorite foods glued to the stomach and pictures of favorite clothing or words listed throughout the body.
With every project, students may share their products with the class; however, you may decide sharing is the basis for your project. With All About Me Suitcases, each child is provided a paper bag with his name printed on the outside. Students then take the bag home with directions explaining to parents what the project entails. Typically, the project allows students to fill the bag with favorite items---colors, pictures, clothes and favorite stuffed animals or souvenirs. Explaining the importance of each item, students then share the contents of their suitcases on a designated day.
