How to Wash Hands in Kindergarten

Washing your hands frequently is the easiest and most effective way to prevent catching and spreading communicable diseases. Kindergartners often forget to wash their hands after using the bathroom and before eating. Many five-year-olds still put their fingers in their mouths and rub their eyes, allowing the spread of colds and other viruses. Make it easy for children to remember to wash their hands by posting a sign in the bathroom at their eye level and by creating a routine of hand-washing after coming in from playing outdoors and before serving a snack or lunch.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a child-friendly hand washing station at the sink. Place a step stool under the sink and use attractive soap, such as a pump with characters on it or soap that creates foam.

    • 2

Have the child wet his hands with warm running water. Show him how to squirt just one pump of liquid or foam hand soap on his hands to avoid wasting it.

    • 3

Encourage the child to rub her hands together while she sings the alphabet song or "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." This will make hand washing last about 20 seconds. Watch to make sure she is lathering the backs of her hands and between her fingers.

Ask him to rinse his hands thoroughly under the warm running water, then dry them with a clean paper towel. If you have hot air blowers in your kindergarten bathroom, he should rub his hands briskly under the air stream until his hands are dry.

Show her how to use a paper towel to open the door to avoid getting germs on her clean hands. If your bathroom does not use paper towels, you can skip this step.
