Take Home Activities for the Three Little Pigs

The Three Little Pigs is a classic story for children and is often taught in kindergarten. The story of the Three Little Pigs teaches students about language arts and science and builds comprehension skills. This story is ideal for planning take-home activities, because most parents are familiar with the story and can easily take part in the activity. Plan simple and entertaining activities for students and family members to complete together.
  1. Pig and Wolf Masks

    • Make pig and wolf masks for parents and their children to use at home to act out The Three Little Pigs. Cut out triangles from pink and gray construction paper; give each student six pink triangles and two gray triangles to use as ears for their masks. In addition, give students four paper plates. Ask students to paint three of the plates pink and one gray. Once the paint is dry, let students draw snouts and eyes for the three pig faces, and a scary wolf face for the wolf mask. Alternatively, let students draw the faces at home. Glue a tongue depressor on the bottom of each plate to serve as a handle, and glue the appropriate ears on the top. Send students home with their four masks and a copy of the Three Little Pigs, and encourage them to act out the story with their family using the masks.

    My House

    • In the Three Little Pigs, the wolf tries to tear down the pigs' houses. One is made of sticks, one of straw and the third, which cannot be knocked down, is made of bricks. As a take-home assignment, ask students to find out what their house is made of by asking their parents and observing their home. Next, ask students to draw a picture of their house to bring in and share with the class.

    Story Sequencing

    • After reading the Three Little Pigs, give students a sequencing activity to take home. Create a worksheet with five panels, each depicting a scene from the story. Ask students to color the pictures and cut them out using safety scissors. Next, ask students to glue the panels onto a piece of paper in the order in which they appear in the story. If desired, include a copy of the story for parents to read to their children as they complete this activity.

    Silly Houses

    • Plan an enjoyable take-home activity that will challenge your students' creativity. Ask students to find different materials in their home that would make a silly house for the three pigs, recommends the website Educational Insights. For example, students might find cereal, ice cream or shoes to make a silly house. Invite students to draw a picture of what the house might look like, and what the wolf could do to knock down each house.
