The Three Little Pigs Craft Activities for Preschoolers

The classic tale of "The Three Little Pigs" and its many variations is a popular story around which lessons are planned in elementary school. Whether you are a teacher needing a craft extension for a lesson or a parent needing a craft for a child's favorite story, the story of "The Three Little Pigs" offers plenty of subject matter for entertaining crafts.
  1. Prepare and Plan

    • Preschoolers have limited control of fine motor skills so you need advance preparation time to pre-cut and prepare many of the supplies. Plan activities that engage preschoolers by including varied kinesthetic, auditory and visual steps and directions.

    Group Project

    • As a simple project, divide class into groups of four to create paper bag puppets. Pre-cut facial shapes for the three pigs and the wolf. Give each student a paper bag and a face shape for one of the characters. Instruct preschoolers to draw the facial details for their character on the bag. Show several examples of the facial details on bags you create ahead of time. After drawing the facial details, have preschoolers glue the face on the bag then use the puppets to retell and perform the story.

    Foam Storyboard

    • Give each preschooler an approximately 9-by-13 inch piece of foam board and glue. Pre-cut simple shapes of the pigs and wolf from felt and give these to the students. Cut the entire body of each in one piece or provide preschoolers with circles, ovals and other body parts with which to assemble the pigs and wolf. Provide embellishments, such as wiggle craft eyes and yarn. Instruct preschoolers to use a finger dipped in glue to dot the back of each piece and create a scene from the story. If desired, have the students add background details with crayons.

    Houses and Animals

    • Assist students in creating models of the pigs' homes from milk cartons or foam board house-shaped cut outs. Give students small red rectangle-shaped paper bricks, craft straw and small sticks for covering the house shapes. Instruct students to use one finger dipped in glue to coat the houses then stick on the sticks, straw or paper bricks. Provide students with paper cutout pig and wolf faces to place on craft sticks. Have preschoolers use the houses and stick puppets to practice retelling the story.
