Ideas for The Three Little Pigs

"The Three Little Pigs" is a classic story that is enjoyed by children of all ages. Read the original story and explore the many new versions that have been written. Create a theme around the book using engaging activities that incorporate art, reading, drama and food.
  1. Art

    • Create the three pigs' houses. Close the top of three small, empty milk cartons using tape or staples. Cut brown craft or construction paper to cover the milk cartons and attach it using glue or tape. Draw a door and windows on the house with a black marker. Glue materials to the house to make it look like a straw, stick or brick house. Use real straw, dried weeds or yellow tissue paper to make a straw house. Use twigs, toothpicks or craft sticks to create a stick house. Use a square-shaped sponge dipped in red paint to create the look of bricks.

    Reading

    • Have students read other versions of "The Three Little Pigs" and compare each story to the original using a Venn diagram. Alternatively, read aloud "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs." Discuss perspective and how the story changes depending on who is telling it--the pigs or the wolf. Encourage the children to talk about real-life scenarios that are influenced by different perspectives.

    Drama

    • Have the children act out the story. Make simple masks by drawing or painting pig faces and a wolf face on paper plates. Attach the plates to craft sticks so children can hold them up in front of their faces. Another option is to hold a mock trial with the wolf as the defendant. Assign each child a role to play, such as judge, member of the jury, lawyer, wolf, pig and witness.

    Food

    • Prepare snacks and meals related to the book. Have pigs in a blanket and strawberry milk. Serve animal crackers and present fruit salad as "pig slop." Offer pretzels as a tribute to the stick house and make haystack cookies to relate to the straw house. Make cupcakes with pink icing and have the children decorate them to make pig faces, using chocolate chips for the eyes and nostrils. Or make cake pops in the shape of pig heads.
