How to Protect Children From School Violence

Violence in the form of school shootings has become more common in recent years. It seems like schools are getting more violent, but actually school violence overall has decreased. If you're concerned about children's safety in school, follow these steps to protect children from school violence.

Instructions

    • 1

Let children know that it seems schools are getting more violent and unsafe, but actually they're becoming safer. Explain to them that school shootings are rare, it only seems like they happen a lot because they're replayed so often in the news.

    • 2

Talk to school officials and teachers about safety programs in place at your children's school. Attend school board meetings to make suggestions and talk to other parents.

    • 3

Check to see that your children's school has programs in place to prevent or counteract bullying or hazing. Programs in conflict management and resolution are also helpful.

    • 4

Help arrange for police and firemen to come to your children's school and give safety talks. Get involved in safety campaigns through the National Crime Prevention Council.

    • 5

Teach your children how to escape or avoid dangerous situations. Tell them what to look for and where to go for help.

    • 6

Talk to your children often about school violence by filtering news programs and discussing them. This discussion will allow them to voice their anxieties and let you know what's going on in their lives at school.

    • 7

Know that there are things that may make your children safer or allow them to feel safer. Many children carry cell phones for emergency use. Also, new bulletproof backpacks are available for children to use as a shield in a shooting.
