Role of Social Worker in Public Schools

Social workers in public schools work with teachers and parents to ensure each child's physical, social, emotional and educational needs are being met. School social workers also work with other social service professionals in the community, as well as doctors, behaviorists and psychiatrists, to coordinate the needs of their students.
  1. Counseling

    • School social workers may act as counselors, working with children who have difficulties at home or in the classroom.

    Assessment

    • Social workers assess students for learning disabilities and monitor their psychological, neurological and physical development.

    Referrals

    • School social workers provide referrals to parents of children in need of professional services.

    Parental Contact

    • Often, social workers are responsible for contacting parents to update them on their children's education and social progress.

    Community Resources

    • School social workers often help low-income families access the community resources needed to meet their children's daily needs.
