How Can People Stop Glacier Melting?

A glacier is a mass of ice that slowly moves over land and water. Glaciers occur on every continent except Australia, and are the result of several years (and even centuries) of snow and ice accumulating faster than they can melt. Most scientists say global warming is causing these massive glaciers to shrink, leading to erosion and flooding.
  1. Going Green

    • Reducing the amount of pollution you release into the environment is one way to control global warming and glacial melting. Use fewer aerosol spray products to eliminate the amount of liquid particles and chlorofluorocarbons that are released is a good start. Both of these are thought to deplete the ozone layer, which protects Earth from harmful radiation. Most CFC use has been banned, but other particles can increase air pollution. Switching to an organic fertilizer in your garden could help reduce nitrates that get trapped in the atmosphere as well.

    Transportation

    • Vehicles and machinery produce carbon dioxide, which is the leading cause of global warming. Carpooling is an efficient way to cut CO2 emissions from car exhaust. You also can take public transportation and walk to nearby places instead of driving. Purchasing a hybrid car also could help. CO2 traps heat in the atmosphere, a process called the greenhouse effect. Burning fossil fuels, such as gasoline and coal (which is used to produce electricity), increases CO2.

    Other Solutions

    • In 2008, a German scientist created a wind shield to help slow global warming's effect on the Rhone glacier of Switzerland. This windscreen is about 50 feet tall and was constructed in hopes of trapping the cool winds that flow down the mountain. However, many glacial experts feel this isn't going to be effective, and recommend using covers to shield glaciers from the environment. Light-colored covers are often used by ski resorts to preserve the snow cover.
