How to Reduce an Accent in a Child's Speech at Home

Children are usually exposed to native accents at school or during ESL classes. There are many ways to reduce a child's accent at home. Each method involves continuous practice because there is no quick solution.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a target accent. For example, you could work on acquiring a British or American accent. If you want your child to speak like Americans, realize that regional accents exist; most New Englanders speak differently from Southerners. You can strive for a neutral accent similar to TV reporters.

    • 2

Have your child listen to newscasts and songs actively. Have her repeat the speaker's words while paying attention to each word's pronunciation. In the beginning, your child should focus on short sections. Before she goes to sleep, have her read a short book aloud.

    • 3

Pace speed so that your child speaks slowly yet more accurately. It is common to make mistakes when speaking quickly, but nonnative speakers must practice speaking in the ideal accent.

    • 4

Work with a native speaker including on intonation, so that words are stressed properly. Develop a routine such as language tutoring every Saturday morning.

    • 5

Use available resources. A dictionary will help you and your child understand meanings of unknown words. Websites like dictionary.com provide definitions and allow you to listen to a word's pronunciation.

    • 6

Create fun games that are age-appropriate. A game that works for a five-year-old will not necessarily work for a 14-year-old. Tongue-twisters provide opportunities to work on moving the tongue correctly. Examples include "three free throws" or "Fred fed Ted bread and Ted fed Fred bread." As your child's confidence and accuracy improve, increase the speed and repetition.

    • 7

Study homonyms, which are words that have different meanings but the same pronunciation. For example, "bear" and "bare" are pronounced the same, but "bear" refers to an animal while "bare" is exposed.
