Conduct a parent meeting at the beginning of the school year. Show them copies of reading textbooks and explain the learning objectives and expectations for their child in this particular grade level. Discuss each skill that is required to achieve reading mastery. Encourage parents to ask questions and voice their concerns.
Use simple terminology. When teachers discuss reading instruction, they often use technical terms that tare unfamiliar to the general public--terms like "phonemic awareness," "automaticity," and "decoding." These skills are essential for reading mastery. If parents know what you are talking about, they can reinforce these strategies at home. Show parents how they can help their child master reading. In the classroom, you model reading strategies and demonstrate fluent reading to your students. Do the same for the parents so they will emulate your methods at home.
Keep parents informed. Most of them will appreciate weekly updates instead of just seeing grades on a quarterly report card. If the child is struggling in reading, contact the parent, explain the area of weakness, and explain what you are doing to address it. Children are more likely to achieve reading mastery if they are supported at home as well as school.
