Discuss what you are reading piece by piece. Connect it with information your child has already learned. For example, if you're reading a story about space and your child recently visited the planetarium with his class, connect the two experiences by discussing them.
Act out the scenes while your child reads to you. Get the whole family, or classroom, involved if you need more characters.
Draw a map to match the book. Draw a dotted line that symbolizes all the places the main character visited.
Talk about the different parts of the story as you read through or when you've finished. Discuss elements that different types of stories have in common. For example, discuss the differences between how a fairy tale and different type of book begins.
Cut out pictures or images from magazines. Create a picture or collage that matches the theme or events of the books.
Write more about the main character. Detail a “day in the life,” a significant event in the character's past or a simple biography.
Use online software or a store-bought game that makes reading interactive. Many websites and stores offer these options.
