How to Evaluate Speech & Language Therapy Programs

Effective evaluation of speech and language programs involves observation, along with a combination of formal and informal evaluation. Oversight and evaluation of strategies, classroom practices and student progress aids in a student's growth in language, thought-processing, and social skills when they are faced with speech and language challenges.

Instructions

    • 1

Review student data to determine gains made in communicative speech and mastery of skills over a year or school semester. In particular, look for gains in articulation, the production of speech sounds to form words. Gains should be within acceptable ranges of advancement, according to the test used.

    • 2

Review the reliability and validity of the tests administered to evaluate and diagnose the student's speech language functioning. You should include a combination of formal tests, such as the Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation and Oral Peripheral Exam for language, parent and teacher interviews, classroom observation, and hands-on speech and language tasks.

    • 3

Evaluate the methods for diagnosis and treatments used to address language difficulties, both in what students understand and in what they verbally express. Be sure that all intervention includes meaningful interactions that children can identify with, such as what would include movement and play.

    • 4

Check tools used to diagnose auditory processing difficulties and be sure that children with any difficulties receive careful evaluation and diagnosis, along with therapy that emphasizes multiple language strategies. Evaluate the extent of accommodation in the curriculum and both inside and outside of the classroom to facilitate effective processing.

    • 5

Check and rate the strategies used to support language development, both written and spoken. These should involve phonics and comprehension. Be sure that partnerships are formed and ideas are developed in collaboration with parents and classroom teachers to increase student practice time and success.

    • 6

Observe and evaluate overall classroom participation among students and the facilitation of effective strategy practice. Observe student-teacher conversations, question-answering, and extent of volunteered verbal responses. Observe socialization factors to include communication skills as they affect peer relationships and socialization. Evaluate strategies used to facilitate development of these skills.
