How to Help Children Learn Their Math Fact Families

Mastering the relationship between numbers in math fact families can be incredibly difficult for young children. It is hard for them to see the connections between the numbers. You can help your child by turning something difficult into something fun. Many children are familiar with playing “Go Fish.” Turning this familiar game into a learning tool is fairly easy. Soon you will be fishing for math fact families and enjoy learning them as well as spending some quality time with your child.

  1. Playing Math Facts Fishing

    • 1

Take your math fact flash cards and separate the deck into the math fact families your child is working on. Set the remainder of the cards aside. If you want a longer game, use all the cards. To start, you might want to use only two players. Add players as you become more comfortable with the game.

    • 2

Shuffle the deck and deal out five fact cards. Place the rest of the separated deck into the “Go Fish” pile. Choose which player will begin.

    • 3

Explain the game to your child. You will ask each other an equation question from the cards in your hand. For example, if you have an equation card for 9+2+11, you would say your equation and ask your opponent if they have any cards in the fact family (3+8=11 or 5+6=11). If player two has one of the cards, then they have to give it to player one. If player two does not have the card, then player one gets to go fish.

    • 4

Play moves to player two. If you get a pair, then you place your pair of facts down in front of you.

    • 5

Play continues until one player is out of cards. The player with the most pairs at the end of the game wins.
