How to Transfer My Child to Another School in Alabama

Alabama public schools require parents or legal guardians to provide multiple legal documents to enroll a child. If you've moved or acquired custody of a child who has previously attended a school, you'll need to execute a transfer. A school transfer is executed as a cooperative effort between your child's previous school and the new school. In Alabama, students are required to register at the school that is assigned to their home address. Exceptions generally require school board approval.

  • Child's birth certificate
  • Alabama immunization record
  • Child's Social Security card
  • Withdrawal slip from previous school

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a withdrawal slip from your child's former school. You will also need your child's grades and attendance records. Visit the school's administrative office for this information.

    • 2

Contact the new school for information on registration dates or office administration hours if you are transferring during the current school year. A complete list of schools and contact information is available on the Alabama State Department of Education website.

    • 3

Visit the new school's administration office, taking your child's school records, birth certificate, up to date immunization records and Social Security card.

    • 4

Complete any necessary paperwork provided to you by the school you are transferring your child to. You will also need to provide your valid photo identification, such as a driver's license and proof of your current address. A recent utility bill with your typed name and address is usually sufficient proof.
