How to Request a Second IQ Test in a Child's School

Raising a child with special needs or exceptionalities can be formidable. These children require a specialized education to meet their varying needs. Navigating the school system presents its own challenges. Since parents are a child's best advocate, they must carefully weigh any results the school district presents. If any of the testing -- the IQ in particular -- seems inaccurate, you have the right to request a reevaluation. According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, you have the opportunity to significantly influence your child's education and services.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a formal letter requesting reevaluation for IQ testing. Include which portions of the results are inaccurate, such as the verbal expression section. Give as many examples of inaccuracies as you can. If you believe the testing environment was inappropriate, state what in the environment should be improved. If the evaluation is wildly incorrect, request an Independent Educational Evaluation that the district must fund.

    • 2

Submit the letter to the school's psychologist. You may also speak to the head of the special education or honors department about your concerns.

    • 3

Call the school psychologist and check on the status of your request if you have not heard back within 10 business days. By law, your child is guaranteed the opportunity to be reevaluated.
