Ideas for Teacher Appreciation Week for K-6 Grades

One week a year might not be enough to thank your child's teachers for all they do, but Teacher Appreciation Week makes it official. During this week, you can send a gift with your child, or perform a special task to help the teachers feel appreciated for helping your child learn and progress. Don't forget about the teachers after this week ends though, appreciation can be shown throughout the school year.
  1. Teachers Breakfast

    • Prepare a breakfast for the teachers at the school one day that week before the classes begin. Coordinate with your school's parent-teacher association to get a group of parent volunteers to cook. Others who can not come in and cook can contribute money to cover the costs of the breakfast. Prepare a breakfast of items such as scrambled eggs, pancakes and waffles for the teachers, along with meats such as sausage and bacon. Don't forget to have some coffee to get their day started on an energetic note.

    Car Wash

    • Surprise the teachers by setting up a car wash at the school in the teachers parking lot. If there is a specific lot that teachers park in, surprise them by washing their cars during the day while they are teaching. If they do not have a specific lot, inform the teachers at the beginning of the week that on that Friday, they can have their cars washed if they park in a certain area of the parking lot. Arrange with the school for only teachers to park in that area for the day.

    Personal Poems

    • Set aside a period of time during the day for the students to honor their teachers by reading poems or stories they wrote about their teachers. The students can create a poem, or a story about why their teacher is their favorite teacher. Some students may choose to read their poems or stories, but not all of them have to. As a souvenir for the teachers, give them a folder, filled with copies of the stories or poems written by all of their students, even the ones who didn't read them out loud.

    Personalized Gifts

    • Have each of the parents in the class contribute toward the cost of a gift basket for the teacher. Inside of the gift basket, include a personalized coffee mug with a couple of bags of flavored coffees for the teacher. Along with these, include a few personalized items for the teacher's desk, such as pens and pencils with his name on it as well as personalized stationery. Finish the basket off with a T-shirt that says "Our Favorite Teacher" and have the students sign their names on it.
