Evaluation of After School Programs

Many students today participate in after school programs offered by their schools. Some students attend to increase their education or skills in reading, writing and math. Others enjoy extracurricular sports or specific clubs that interest them, such as music, drama or science. Many parents today rely on these programs to care for their children when they are at work and to provide a safe and enriching environment for their child. Finding a suitable after school program for your child is an important task.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask for a list of after school programs provided at your child's school. Look over the list and make a decision with your child about which program he would be most interested in and which best suits his needs. Is your child looking for a social program after school or is he more interested in one that concentrates on a special interest? If your child is interested in a social group after school, find out what types of activities are offered. Determine if students are allowed to work on homework and whether help is provided. Also, check whether there will be adequate supervision for your child and enough activities to keep him occupied while he is there.

    • 2

Set up a time to observe the after school program with your child. This is the best way to determine if it is a good fit for your child and her interests. Is the program properly supervised by adults and other teachers? Will snacks be served? Is the program run at the school or will your child need to travel to another location for the program? Ask questions of the program supervisors and take notes so you can make the best choice for your child.

    • 3

Check national organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs, 4-H, and other nationally run organizations if your child's school does not offer the type of program she would like. Most cities and towns offer these programs on a local level and your child's school can provide you with information. Check into transportation options so your child can travel to the location where these groups meet, if they are not held at the school. Parents can usually pick their child up at the location at the end of the day.

Cost is a factor in deciding which after school program your child will participate in. Many times music and sports organizations have costs tied to them in the form of uniforms, instruction, transportation, and other miscellaneous expenses. Check on costs and determine if the program is affordable for you. Many programs offered in schools, such as science clubs and book clubs, have minimal or no fees.
