Preschool Educational Board Games

Various studies have been published examining the effect of preschool on scholastic performance. According to Barnett, children with access to high quality Pre-K programs reap many benefits. They include higher test scores, better social skills, less grade repetition, and increased earnings, as well as decreased rates of crime, teen pregnancy, abortion and smoking. In order to enhance your child's early academics, educational games can be played in the home setting to foster learning and success.
  1. Cranium Preschool

    • Cranium incorporates movement.

Cranium Playground Preschool Edition is an interactive, entertaining and thought-provoking game intended for children ages four to six years. By incorporating four stations, Cranium Playground helps children practice early reading and math skills. Word Worm has children making letter shapes, thus exercising their knowledge of alphabetic principles. Data Head enhances quantitative reasoning by having players match and count. Star Performer allows children to dance, practicing kinesthetic performance. Finally, Creative Cat strengthens visual-motor skills by having children draw pictures.

    Memory

    • Practice memory skills.

Playing Memory is an effective way to strengthen learning and working memory skills. With all the cards face down on the playing surface, players are to pick two cards. The cards can be of various pictures, designs or shapes. The object of the game is to match the most cards, which the player gets to keep; whoever has the most cards when all are matched up wins the game. Children must remember the locations of failed attempts in order to be successful at Memory. Another variation of the game is by matching cards that begin or end with the same sound, such as "cat" and "cake." This will incorporate phonological awareness skills into the game.

    Boggle Jr.

    • Boggle enhances phonetic abilities.

Boggle Jr. is a simplified version of the original Boggle game, intended for children ages three to six years. Using visual-motor skills and hand-eye coordination, players must examine lettered dice to reproduce presented words. Another variation of the game is having players flip over some of the letters of the presented word. When they must spell the word themselves, they have to rely on either memory or phonological awareness skills to create the word. Boggle Jr. aids in reading readiness and spelling development. It can be played as a group or individually.

    Wild Planet Flipper Frenzy

    • The shark is "It."

The Wild Planet Flipper Frenzy Game tests children's word fluency and social skills. It is recommended for children ages three to five years. Each player is given a sea creature toy. The child with the shark becomes "It." He is asked a question, such as "Who has eight legs?" The shark player must correctly answer the question, run to the octopus player and catch him. The octopus then becomes "It." Wild Planet Flipper Frenzy encourages movement and peer interaction.
