Free Learning Sites for Children

Part of a well-rounded educational experience is teaching children to interact with technology. Since we live in a digital age, children must learn to maneuver through Internet applications and computer programs if they are to be prepared for future careers. There are many websites that provide free educational activities that help children sharpen their skills in subjects such and math and language while learning some of the functions of computers.
  1. Read Write Think

    • This site has a number of free interactive tools that help children learn language, writing and organizational skills. Some tools are games, such as "ABC Match" where children play a memory game by matching letters to pictures. Some of Read Write Think's tools provide interactive learning lessons, allowing kids to create their own projects. The site's "Acrostic Poems" tool explains what an acrostic poem is and helps children write their own poem that they can print when finished.

    Game Goo

    • This site provides a number of free educational games for children. The games are arranged in three tiers: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Beginner games include "Paw Park Alphabet Bears," which helps young children pair upper and lower case letters together. "Monkey Business" is a game at the intermediate level that helps kids learn proper sentence structure. At the advanced level, the game "Fearless Frieda" uses a skateboarder to teach spelling words.

    Tvo Kids

    • This site has a variety of tools to help children learn. The site provides educational short films, such as "Bug Camp" that teaches children about insects. Tvo Kids also has an art application called "Artbot Jr." that allows children to draw and paint artwork to share with others on the site. Other activities include educational games and downloadable activities. Children can check out information on recommended books through the "Book Club" section. Tvo Kids holds contests, such as "WOW Goes to Greece" where children enter a drawing of what they would do in Greece for a chance to win a trip.

    Learning Planet

    • This site combines puzzles, worksheets and games to teach everything from math to spelling. The site has daily word search puzzles, Sudoku, and quizzes. Their interactive games include "Treasure Hunt," which encourages kids to use deductive reasoning to uncover pirate treasure. This site does have the option to subscribe for a fee. Membership gives you access to more games and features, but you can use many of Learning Planet's applications without paying anything.
