How to Read Along With Stories and Songs for Kids

Reading with your kids during their free time at home can both improve their reading skills as well as encourage their participation in reading activities. Towards this effort, parents may opt for a non-traditional approach to reading with read-along books with accompanying songs. While it is easy to simply allow your child to listen, parents can take an active approach and read along with their children for added educational benefits.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit in a comfortable position with your child facing the television, computer screen or radio, depending on the type of read-along you are watching or listening to. You should sit next close to your child so that the two of you can both read the words on the page. Have your child sit on you while holding the book, if this is comfortable as well.

    • 2

Turn the video or radio. Test that the volume is not too loud or too low to hinder understanding of the story or discussion between you and your child.

    • 3

Point your finger at each word as it is spoken on the video or audio and be sure that your child is following each word closely. Ask him to pronounce out loud words that may be unfamiliar to him.

    • 4

Pause the video or audio at times to discuss the story with your child. Ask him what has happened so far and questions about the plot to ensure he is comprehending the story as it is being told.

    • 5

Note any new words spoken during the story for review later. You may also write a list of new concepts of ideas discussed in the story as well.

    • 6

Ask your child what she thought of the story and discuss the plot and her favorite characters at the end of the story. Review any new words as well.
