How to Find Schools for Kids With Learning Disabilities

Finding the best school for a child is a primary objective of every parent. This task can be complicated on its own but when you have a son or daughter with a learning disability (LD) the objective becomes more challenging. Fortunately, there are many resources available for parents, including both public and private enterprises. Parents need to be proactive and begin locating and selecting an appropriate education facility as soon as possible following identification of their child's disability.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the public school your child would normally be zoned to attend as your first effort in finding an educational facility. Meet with the principal and staff regarding their specific methods of teaching the learning disabled. Find out what technology is available at the school that can be useful to your child. You may also want to consult with the superintendent of schools in your area and the coordinator of studies for the learning disabled.

    • 2

Check with your local government's social services agency for more help in locating schools. Social services officials may be able to provide you with a listing of and information regarding schools in your area which provide specialized programs for LD students.

    • 3

Consult the National Center for Learning Disabilities (see Resources below). The NCLD is an organization devoted to the education and success in life of those with an LD. Their comprehensive website provides a vast amount of information for parents and others (see Resources below).

    • 4

Get help from organizations involved in your child's particular disability. For example, if your child is autistic you may wish to contact the Autism Society of America or if your son or daughter has dyslexia you can look to The Dyslexia Foundation (see Resources below).

    • 5

Network with other parents with children who have the same disability as your child. Join a support group of parents of children with LDs. Use your newly formed associations to gather information about different schools. Chances are you will be receiving candid information you may not get directly from the schools themselves.
