How to Teach Children With Multiple Disabilities

Children with multiple disabilities can be challenging to teach. These children can have a combination of mobility, speech, learning, mental, visual or brain disorders. These students may have a hard time speaking or processing auditory or sensory information, and may also have limited physical movement and struggle with social interaction. There are a few methods that can be applied to teaching children with multiple disabilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Integrate learning aids as soon as a child with multiple disabilities begins school. You will need to have the appropriate professionals available to give attention to the child during the learning process. Get medical advice on whether the child will need speech and language therapists or physio therapists, or both, to assist with the learning process.

    • 2

Develop a team comprised of parents, teachers and medical professionals. This community should meet on a regular basis to discuss the learning approach strategies for the child with multiple disabilities.

    • 3

Integrate children with multiple disabilities with other peers. Part of the learning process is social development, so disabled children should be integrated within a classroom setting if it is appropriate for each child's condition. If a child is in a classroom, make sure to arrange it so that the child will have access to the technological resources that will help him learn.

    • 4

Create an individual education curriculum for each child with multiple disabilities. This plan can be adapted to the progression of each child's learning, but the curriculum should be developed with the team of medical and teaching professionals, who should generally be directly involved in the teaching process.
