Learning to Read Chinese for Children

Unlike English, the Chinese language does not offer readers a simple alphabet to memorize. Instead, readers must learn individual characters that each represent a single syllable. Characters are generally written in two parts. One portion of the character, or "hanzi," represents the sound that the character makes, while another portion of the character represents the meaning. An actual word may consist of several characters, so it's important for children to learn a variety of characters in order to read effectively.

Instructions

Review Chinese flashcards with your child. One of the simplest, most efficient ways for a child to learn a large number of characters quickly is to look at character flashcards. You can make your own flashcards, buy professionally distributed ones or review flashcards online. Start with five flashcards at first and gradually add new characters for your child to learn.

    • 2

Read your child books in Chinese. Many popular American children's books are now available in both Chinese and English, so pick out a few to read with your child. You can read the book in Chinese with the English definition printed beneath the word. Some books also include Pinyin, which is the English pronunciation of the Chinese character.

    • 3

Practice writing characters with your child. Pick out a few characters to work on and write each character 10 times. Repetition will help your child memorize not only how to write the character, but how to recognize it. Say the character out loud with your child as he writes it.
