How to Run an Athletic Booster Club

An athletic booster club’s primary responsibility is organizing fundraising events. The money raised from these events is then given to a school athletic team, usually in the form of equipment, uniforms and consumable supplies. An athletic club is a helpful ally for a school with a low budget, as the money raised by the club can often make up for budget deficits that may leave a team without vital gear. If you are taking over a booster club and want to ensure it stays successful, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread responsibilities evenly across booster club members. With more people pitching in to help, every event will feel much easier to pull off.

    • 2

Keep detailed financial records. The IRS recognizes most booster clubs as nonprofit organizations, meaning you will need to submit tax information at the end of the year. Accurate records make this process less stressful and keep your booster club safe.

    • 3

Hold booster club meetings at least once per week. At these meetings, you can assign new tasks, brainstorm ideas for fundraisers and check in with each participant regarding the status of their current responsibilities.

    • 4

Choose officers to help you with some of the more important tasks in your club. You cannot manage every last thing by yourself, so put someone in charge of each specific department. For instance, a football booster club could have officers for money management, recording meetings, equipment acquisition, managing food and beverages, uniform maintenance and contacting local businesses.

    • 5

Seek financial support through avenues other than fundraisers. You can often find sponsorships from local business in exchange for advertisements in club programs, or earn money from private donors for completing community service projects. If your booster club has a positive image, money is easier to raise.

    • 6

Set goals. Your primary responsibility is raising money for your team and it is difficult to gauge success without goals. Determine how much money you would like to raise each semester and have your club members commit to making that sum a reality.
