How to Run a School's Levy Campaign

When a school levy is placed on the ballot, there is bound to be a mixed response from the community at large. However, a successful levy campaign means the eventual receipt of tax funds that often save jobs and programs that would otherwise be cut due to inadequate funding. When your district commits to asking the public for additional money, there are several strategies you can use to sway the voters in your direction.

Instructions

    • 1

Organize your volunteers into groups and assign each one a focus, including distributing lawn signs supporting the levy, making door-to-door visits to speak to voters, working on social networking campaigns and preparing informational mailings to the community.

    • 2

Hold an informational meeting that is open to the public to answer questions and outline the reasons behind the need for a levy. Ensure that school board members and officials are present to represent the school system.

    • 3

Recruit individuals to writer letters to the editor of the community newspaper in favor of the levy. A passionate, well-written letter often goes a long way toward convincing people who are against or undecided about the levy to vote for it.

    • 4

Organize community fund-raisers to raise additional money for the district and put you in contact with those whose votes matter. Have literature, yard signs, flyers and other propaganda available to encourage people to commit to voting for the levy.

    • 5

Hold pep rallies before important sporting events to create a sense of school district pride in parents, students, staff and community members. Distribute literature that gives a detailed explanation of how the money from the levy will benefit the school system.
