The Smart Board can be useful in sorting. It allows a child to come to the board and use his finger or a pointer to quickly sort the shapes into different categories. The teacher could have several different figures on the board and ask the student to sort the figures by shape or by plane and solid figures. Students can also sort the figures according to their attributes, such as number of sides.
Teachers and students can use the pens on the Smart Board to draw examples of plane figures on the board. Open the Smart Notebook program to a blank sheet to allow students to draw plane figures. Select the shape tool before students come to the board. This tool recognizes the shape that is drawn on the board and turns it in to a perfect shape. For example, if a circle is drawn but is not completely round, the shape tool will make the circle perfectly round.
Open the Smart Notebook program and navigate to the Gallery. Search in the Gallery for plane figures or shapes. This page will provide examples of many different plane figures. The images can be dragged onto the screen and a picture can be created using several different plane figures. The pens can be used to add additional detail to the pictures. Some ideas to get students started would be to create a flower or a house using plane figures. Or create a more complex picture such as an animal.
Connect to the Internet using the Smart Board and visit BrainPop Jr.at brainpopjr.com/math/geometry/planeshapes to watch a short video explaining what plane figures are and how to identify them. After watching the video, ask students to provide examples of different plane figures from around the classroom by playing "I Spy a Plane Figure." For an additional challenge, ask the students to describe the attributes of the plane figure they see.
