Smart Board Activities for the First Grade on Mail

Smart Boards are interactive whiteboards that are used in the classroom to help students better understand a topic. For the topic of mail, a Smart Board can be a useful tool in helping first graders understand mail basics. If you're a teacher trying to come up with ideas for Smart Board mail activities, there are quite a few options out there.
  1. Formatting Letters

    • Use your Smart Board to show children how to format a letter. Have the children write a group letter on the screen to the principal of your school, or someone who may have done something nice for the class recently that deserves a thank you note. Print out their finished work and have everyone sign it, so the kids can see what the completed product looks like.

    Addressing Traditional Envelopes

    • Use your Smart Board to show children how to address a traditional envelope. Start with a picture of a blank envelope and then have children help you determine where they should put the address of the recipient, return address, and stamp on the outside. Having the envelope image on the screen will help visual learners pick up the concept more quickly, and the guessing can be an engaging activity for the whole class.

    Writing Email

    • Interactively show the children how to send email by creating an email-themed Smart Board lesson. Explain what the "To:" field is for, how email addresses need to be formatted and how to write a subject for their messages. A large illustration of blank email on the screen can be an excellent way to convey how the process works. Have the kids practice sending an email by writing a letter to someone else in the school and sending it off from the entire class.

    Email Safety

    • Go over email and mail safety with your kids. Show examples of different types of email, and have your children decide which ones are from good people and which they should tell an adult about.
