Coloring worksheets are a great way to keep students' attention as they learn. These coloring sheets are divided up into sections, much like a paint by number, and inside each section is a suitable addition or subtraction question. At the top of each sheet is a legend with numbers that correspond to a particular color. As the child solves the questions, she will be able to color in the areas of their picture by following the legend.
Children in the first grade should be learning how to tell time on a digital or analog clock. There are many different activities that develop the ability to tell time. One of the easiest and most used methods is to create time sheets that display different clocks set to different times (both analog and digital). The students should fill in the worksheets with the appropriate time. To add a different approach, tell the students the time, and have them draw the hands on empty clocks. Another activity using time is to ask students periodically throughout the day to write down what time it is. At the end of the day you can collect the sheets.
Children love games that are interactive and the "Get Into Groups of..." game is a great way to get kids moving while thinking about numbers. Have the students stand at the front of the class (or push back the desks to make more room) and tell them to get into groups of a certain number. Students will have to form groups as quickly as possible to make the required number. This is a good ice-breaking game and will also improve their addition skills.
In the first grade, students should be able to understand the idea of tallying numbers and see that the number 10 can really be thought of as a group of ten ones. Tally worksheets are a great way to test students ability to group objects. Give them a worksheet with a variety of tallied numbers on it and ask them to write how much each tally stands for. Another more hands-on activity is to provide students with blocks or candies and have them group them into certain numbers and then write a tally for their pile of objects.
